Knott Co. man killed in crash

A valiant rescue effort extricated a trapped motorist following a crash on Wednesday, Jan. 25, but the Knott County resident ultimately lost his life as a result of his injuries.

Jerry Moore, 51, of Lackey was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 550 in Lackey around 12 p.m. when he crashed into the creek. Moore exited the right shoulder of the roadway and down an embankment before striking the water. His vehicle, a green late 1990s Toyota Corolla, was barely visible from the water and only his head was not submerged in the icy cold water. Several good Samaritan truck drivers jumped into the creek to assist the driver following the crash.

Kentucky State Police, Ball Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Jones Fork VFD and Trans-Star Ambulance Service all initially responded. The…
