Special funding helps students

Donor website raised over $82,000 for Carr Creek Elementary

Schools across America are participating in a program designed to help public schools with funding for specific projects. Through the program 65 projects have been awarded to Kentucky schools. By writing competitive proposals, Carr Creek Elementary received 61 of those funded projects. Principal Creech and some of the teachers from Carr Creek Elementary explained how the program works at Tuesday night’s Knott County Board of Education meeting.

A nonprofit website, DonorsChoose.org, connects public-school teachers in need of resources with donors. DonorsChoose uses the power of the internet to drive money into classrooms. Funded projects across the U.S. include classroom materials, such as books, classroom supplies like crayons and dry eraser boards, instruments, and equipment. Carr Creek received mostly technology related items.

The organization is an ongoing hub for public school teachers to post requested items on the site. People and organizations can browse wish lists and give any amount to the projects that interest them. DonorChoose collects the funds and when enough has been reached for a selected project, they send the school or teacher the materials or equipment. In exchange the kids are asked to take pictures and send a thank you to the site.

Selected projects could be for anything needed in the classroom. Carr Creek teachers posted projects for laptops, iPads, iPods, Nooks, cameras, graphing calculators, etc. Project funding has been categorized in three grade groups – Kindergarten to grade 2, grade 3-5, grade 6- 8. Collectively the projects totaled $82,464 in materials alone.
