Knott BOE approves school trips

With the school year just over a month from closing for summer break, Knott County board members approved numerous class trips for schools. Other business was conduced and Hindman Elementary School presented the “Big Apple” school theme during Tuesday night’s meeting.

Kelly Hall, curriculum director, distributed the District Improvement Plan Executive Summary saying the District Leadership Team (DLT) met recently to review district and school data and guide the prioritizing of district needs. To build upon the previous plan, DLT collaborated with site-based councils and other committees. Involved people suggested possible areas to strengthen and grow.

The CDIP indicated components as fully, partially, or not fully implemented yet.

“Honestly, this is where we think we are and we hope we improve every day,” said Hall.

Eighth grade class trips approved by the board were Beaver, Jones Fork, Carr Creek and Hindman Elementary schools. The dates for these trips will be either May 14 or May 15 at Kings Island. The Emmalena Academic Team request for an out of state trip to Kings Island was approved. Cordia Seniors were approved to take an out of state trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee on April 20 –April 21.

The Board of Education supported Knott County Central’s project graduation with a $2,000 donation.

Finance Director Greg Conn asked the board members if they wanted to recommend approval to declare a section of guardrail from Knott County Central as surplus during this meeting or wait until the fall. The members voted to wait and include this item with other items during the fall. Hindman Elementary principal Wes Halbert highlighted his school’s progress. He announced the school met 100 % of the NCLB goals. The EXPLORE college rediness exam showed positive growth in all areas. One…
