Court considers new proposal, theft causes pool to open late

In the regular monthly meeting of the Knott Fiscal Court this week, officials were asked to consider a proposal which could potentially help children from across the state and provide some jobs in Knott County. The downside would be the effect of the proposal on a popular community center. Representatives from Martin Enterprises brought a presentation to the court concerning the establishment of a group home for children ages 10-18 who have been impacted by a poor home life.

The Martin reps explained that such a facility would work with the court system (juvenile justice, family court) on placement of these children. The facility would be residential and would offer them things like group counseling and teaching life skills. It would be for rehabilitation, not detention. Similar facilities are located in Barbourville and West Liberty, the court was told.

The effort would be funded by the state, and someone is currently working on grants toward that part of the equation. What the organization needs, they related, is a facility, and they said they had identified what could be a perfect location – the former Beckham Combs Elementary School. Any needed renovations would be done with grant funds, they added.
