KCC art teacher given special award

Recently, the University of Kentucky’s College of Education honored Carolyn Slone Gibson with an award, “A Teacher Who Made a Difference.” A reception was held April 28 in the UK Student Center Great Hall and Theater where UK Women’s Basketball Head Coach Matthew Mitchell was the spokesperson.

According to Ms. Gibson, “I was so blessed to receive this recognition for my teaching and deeply regret that I was unable to attend the ceremony due to having a chemotherapy treatment for my ovarian cancer that week. Yet, I wholeheartedly want to thank Salina Gibson, one of my former advanced art students, for nominating me.

“This was extremely special as I have tried to use my teaching visual art as a means to honor God and better the lives of my students. It is wonderful to be appreciated at the end of a long career.” Ms. Gibson just announced her retirement after 34 years at Knott County Central High School.

Carolyn is the daughter of Wevena Hall Slone and the late Ray Slone, a well-known educator and musician in Knott County. She lives with her daughter, Christina in Hindman.
