State Rep. John Short wins big, President Obama unpopular

By SHARON K. HALL

A large number of Knott County residents displayed their displeasure with President Obama in the 2012 Primary Election, as over 73 percent of those voting in the Democratic primary chose “uncommitted” rather than vote for the president. No doubt a large factor in this vote was the current administration’s stance toward the coal industry.

Knott resident John Short, state representative for the 92nd District, easily won the Democratic Primary. Only 17.82% of registered voters in Knott County went to the polls on Tuesday.

Unofficial Knott County ballots were released Tuesday night. Of the 2,090 ballots cast 1,016 votes were uncommitted in the Presidential race. In the Democratic Presidential race, 1,006 were uncommitted and 366 votes were cast for Barack Obama.

The Republican Presidential race had 10 votes uncommitted. Mitt Romney received the most Republican votes at 53 followed by Ron Paul – 15, Newt Gingrich – 11, and Rick Santorum – 6.
