Always the animal lover, Ray Mullins of Topmost was both shocked and delighted when walking near his home on Puncheon Rd. Thursday morning. Mullins, 76, spotted a baby deer standing on the roadway. His instincts took over as he took the fawn under his care.

“It didn’t seem to be afraid,” expressed Mullins. “It was the smallest deer I have ever seen. I didn’t want to leave it there because coyotes would get it. The mother probably got hit by a car.”

Mullins, despite being in bad health and on oxygen, brought the fawn to his home and placed it in a small fenced area. He then rigged up some tin roofing

and found hay to feed it. People often drop off animals at his house, knowing he will take care of them.

He and his daughter-in- law Teresa Mullins spent every four to five hours bottle-feeding milk to the newborn, which resembles the fabled Bambi.

“It’s amazing holding one of these and knowing how big it will be,” said Teresa.
