Inmate death reported at Ky. River Regional Jail

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at approximately 11:03 a.m., Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard was contacted by the Kentucky River Regional Jail, advising that they had an inmate who had been found unresponsive.

KSP units, along with Perry County EMS, were dispatched to the detention center.  The inmate, Larry J. Trent, age 54, of Hazard, was transported to the Hazard ARH Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased by the Perry County Coroner.

The preliminary investigation found that an altercation took place between Larry Trent and jail staff, at approximately 7:18 a.m.  Larry Trent was restrained by jail staff, and placed back in the holding cell he was in prior to the altercation.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., jail staff checked on Larry Trent in his cell, and found him to be unresponsive.  Upon locating him, jail staff contacted KSP and EMS.

An autopsy is being conducted, and results are pending.  This incident remains under investigation by KSP Post 13 in Hazard.
