String of crashes leaves two hurt

A rash of four accidents that occurred Monday, April 16 in Knott County sent two people to the hospital.

A TVS Cable pickup truck operated by Johnny Garretson of Pinetop was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 550 from Hindman. According to Chief Deputy Robby Slone of the Knott County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 8:08 a.m. a black Ford truck, also traveling eastbound, attempted to pull into D’s Stop N’ Shop, leaving Garretson unable to stop in time. The service truck rear- ended the Ford operated by Keith Smith of Leburn. Smith was transported to Hazard ARH by TransStar Ambulance Service with minor injuries.

Later that afternoon, a black Jeep Cherokee driven by Betty Ritchie, 37, of Pippa Passes was involved in a two-car accident on Branham’s Creek Road. According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Joe

Dials, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Ritchie was traveling toward Beaver and rounding a sharp curve past the Hwy. 899 junction when she lost control of her vehicle. The Jeep slid on the wet pavement and into the path of Hester Thornsberry, 54, of Topmost, operating a 2001 Saturn, colliding head- on. No medical attention was sought. TransStar Ambulance Service, Knott County Sheriff’s Department, Kentucky State Police, and Knott County Constable Doug Gibson responded.

A third accident occurred that night in Hindman in front of the Mountain Heart Center on Hwy. 160 near ProMart. According to Kentucky State Police trooper Randall Riley, at approximately 8:15 p.m. Lydia Roberts, 69, of Hindman, operating a red Dodge Ram, was pulling out in front of the Mountain Heart Center at the entrance to her residence at Highland…

 

Lydia Roberts was taken to Hazard ARH after she was extricated from her vehicle.
