Patrols step up seat belt enforcement

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign gets underway as Kentucky State Police Post 13 join forces with local police agencies. “We are here to save lives,” expressed KSP Trooper Tony Watts.  “It is the heart of our mission to protect the public and that is why we joined law enforcement nationwide. Do your part to buckle up and if you see something of concern call 1-800-222-    5555.”

The campaign began May 20 and will run through June 3. The time period around Memorial Day is known to have one of the highest volume of traffic. KSP Post 13 Captain Blake Slone  said there were 721 highway fatalities statewide in 2011. Of those fatalities 576 individuals were motor vehicle occupants. 58.7 percent were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the  crash. It is believed that lives could have been saved if more occupants simply wore their seatbelts.

Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb said, “I have been in law enforcement for 40 years and Memorial Day has higher traffic than any other holiday.”
