Hindman Elementary student wins Grandparent Essay Contest

A Hindman Elementary student was selected as the Knott County winner in the “2011-2012 Grandparent of the Year” contest sponsored by AARP Kentucky and the Kentucky Retired Teachers’ Association (KRTA).

Kathryn Hunter, Hindman, Ky., is among thousands of Kentucky fifth graders who participated in the 11th annual essay competition for 2011-2012. Students submitted essays answering why “My Grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the year” to their fifth grade teachers who select the school’s winner. Each participating school winner and school receives recognition certificates.

As county winner, Kathryn Hunter received a framed certificate for her efforts, and the essay was submitted for district competition. She and other district winners then become eligible to participate in the state finals. In a recognition ceremony the “Grandparent of the Year” and state winner were honored at the annual KRTA Convention in Louisville, Ky., on April 24, 2012.

The essay competition is a unique way to recognize the significant contributions that older Kentuckians make toward shaping the lives and values of youth across the Commonwealth. The “AARP Grandparent of the Year” essay contest is organized by local Retired Teacher Association units and AARP Chapters, who help secure local school participation, promote the activity and serve as local contest judges.

Knott County Retired Teachers’ Organization compliments Kathryn Hunter, the daughter of Scotty and Elizabeth Hunter, for her winning essay. Her essay was written about her grandmother, Jewell Hunter. Kathryn received a certificate from KRTA and AARP, a certificate and a cash prize from the Knott County Retired Teachers Association.
