Domestic altercation leads to Knott woman’s murder charge

Kayla Sparkman has been charged with murder.

A Knott County man is dead and his estranged wife is in jail after a violent domestic incident over the weekend.

According to a report from Kentucky State Police, Post 13 in Hazard received a 911 call around 11:58 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, stating that individuals were fighting in the Amburgey community of Knott County.

Knott Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Fugate was the first officer on the scene at Perkins-Madden Road. “The first call we heard said there was a fight in the road, but while I was on my way there, a second call came in that someone had died,” he told the Times. Fugate said EMS personnel were right behind him, and they were soon followed by Tpr. Randall Riley. Officers and emergency personnel discovered Jonathon Sparkman, age 27, of Topmost, with multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident by the Knott County Coroner.

Kentucky State Police arrested Kayla Sparkman, age 25, of Litt Carr and charged her with murder. She was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail. Kayla Sparkman pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on Tuesday; a preliminary hearing will be held at 9 a.m. on June 26.

This case is still being investigated by Kentucky State Police in Hazard.
